Author's Note: I had intended to let Inara tell this tale, as a follow-up to her Jayne and the Dragon Princess bedtime story, but -- wouldn't you know it? -- Mal kept making rude noises and inserting his own little side-comments whenever certain characters were mentioned, and so I finally had to let him just tell the next part of the story all by himself, in his own, inimitable fashion.

Author's Note: Once the idea of telling the story of River and Jayne in the form of a fable (partly based on a research project I did in graduate school many years ago for a course in 'Women in Buddhist Traditions') entered my head, I couldn't get it out. And who better than "Auntie Inara" to become the Scheherazade of bedtime stories, putting an elegant and semi-educational spin on the old genre of "Back when Pa was courtin' Ma" tales, in order to keep a passel of hyper-intelligent and hyper-tactile (and probably just plain hyper) rugrats from working their parents' last good nerve at bedtime?

Turns out, you can make a very tasty curried pot pie with leftover turkey meat and a whole host of substitutions. Yay! Now I just hope that the next experiment -- using more of the leftover turkey in a sort of pseudo pad thai concoction -- works out as well!

Author's Note: Again, massively OOC for Jayne and River, I'm sure, but I still can't resist letting these two battle it out in yet another pseudo-literary venue.

This fic was partly inspired by the many kind reviews I received for the first two chapters, and partly by a rerun of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ that I finally saw a couple of nights ago (the one where the guys combined several leisure activities into one new game, ‘Secret Agent Laser Obstacle Chess’).

Author's note: This fic is an alternative 3rd installment in my Not-So-Blithe Spirits series (an optional sequel/companion piece to Apocalypse, Now and Then which can be read in place of "What Are Very Old Friends For?") and is dedicated to fanfiction.net reviewer Smallville-HarryPotterfan13, who suggested a rather different Buffyverse identity for a certain heroic soul from the Hercules/Xena pantheon.

The plot-bunny for this particular alternative-AU installment hopped so far into the ‘fluff zone’ that I don’t think it’s ever coming back, so consider yourself warned. :)

Again, massively OOC for Jayne and River, I'm sure, but I still can't resist letting these two battle it out on an unusual (for them, at least) literary playground. Please don't sue me.

THEOLOGICAL DISCLAIMER: I'm figuring that the same River Tam who wanted to correct the scientific inaccuracies in Book's bible wouldn't hesitate to change the text of a famous poem that is generally considered to be about the God of that bible and the whole question of theodicy. If there's any heresy herein, blame it on the brilliant but definitely 'different' brain of River, and not on this poor, procrastinating pastor, writing fanfic when she should be polishing her sermon for this Sunday.
