Mom and Dad (who just came to town for a few days to switch cars with me and discover exactly how messy and out-of-control my housekeeping has become during my extended illness -- yikes!) and I went to my local multiplex yesterday afternoon to see Going Upriver (the movie about John Kerry's wartime experiences and participation in "Vietnam Vets Against the War" -- the actual story, in news footage and interviews with people who were actually there at the time, rather than the load of crap the so-called "Swift Boat Veterans for 'Truth'" have been shilling), and it was REALLY GOOD.

Besides the inherent interest for me (after all, besides being a history buff, I do remember living through many of those years, even if only from a young child's perspective), this movie provided some good insight into the young John Kerry (who, God and the voters willing, might be in the Oval Office come January, making his character and personal journey a matter of some interest to us all) and his values and formative experiences, as a scholar trying to see beyond the emotions of the moment and find some larger meaning for himself, his fellow veterans, and his nation.

Especially following Kerry's strong showing in the first debate Thursday night (which I watched -- and heckled loudly, at times -- with my Scrabble partner), it's a good idea (in my view) to know more about this guy than the TV news has so far shown us.

See Going Upriver as soon as you get the chance, or tell your local theater-managers that you'd like to be able to see it. And then tell all your friends and family to get their friends and family to see it, too. You won't be sorry.
