They'll be turning the lights out on me any minute here in the office, but I wanted to jot down a few quick thoughts about the two movies I've seen so far this week (and "Howl's Moving Castle" opened in my neighborhood today -- Yay!).
These comments contain no spoilers at all.
"Cinderella Man" -- Yes, it may not be the greatest, most artistic movie ever made, but it's certainly riveting, tear-jerking in places (without ever feeling maudlin), and very satisfying, in the end. Darned if this movie isn't enough to make me like Russell Crowe, for a change!
"Walk on Water" (I can't begin to remember the original Hebrew title) -- I'm glad I made the time to go see this (even at a full-price evening show!) on Tuesday, because this movie from Israel, about a Mossad agent who is physically and emotionally incapable of tears but very good at his job of eliminating threats, was quite surprising and enjoyable at times, if perhaps a tad too pat in its ending. The agent, Eyal, is assigned to try to track down an aged Nazi war criminal (so they can "get him before God does") by getting close to the old man's granddaughter, who lives on an Israeli Kibbutz, and her visiting brother from Germany. You just know he's going to get emotionally stirred up by those two, no matter how cold he seems, and "wackiness" (of a rather serious and sometimes sad sort) ensues. In Hebrew, English, German, and Arabic, with English subtitles (but at least half of the film was in English, because the girl and her brother don't speak much Hebrew and they don't know that Eyal is fluent in German, so their conversations all take place in English). It's a nice change, even if the ending seems much weaker than the rest of the film.
And now home to try to come up with something new to say in my sermon for Father's Day (I've got more than 24 hours to figure it out, so I'm not really panicking yet)!
