Well, it may not be bad, if you're not expecting it to correspond at all with the books upon which it's supposed to be based. I haven't read an LJ review by someone who's unfamiliar with the Earthsea books, yet.

For all I know, it might be reasonably entertaining as a completely separate fantasy film, if you're not expecting the characters and plot to reflect anything of their namesakes in the books -- just as I actually enjoyed the Marc Singer movie "Beastmaster" (for the sheer pleasure of watching him run around in that loincloth and little else), once I accepted that it shared nothing (beyond the title and idea of Dar's mental bond with animals) with the Andre Norton novel upon which it was supposedly loosely based. (The sequel in which Dar travels to our world is much more fun . . . and more watchable, since it features Sarah Douglas instead of Tanya Roberts as a female lead!)

If you're not a particular fan of the books (which I've not read yet, though they're sitting on my shelf), it might be fun, and with the Sci-Fi Channel's habits of re-running things over and over, you can probably still catch it sometime this month.
