I made sure to start early on Tuesday, so I could leave the publishing house in time to take in the late afternoon matinee of "Layer Cake" -- not because I'm such a fan of gangster/heist/drug-dealer movies in general, but just because I enjoy Colm Meaney so much, even when he's playing kind of a mean guy!
Not a bad flick at all, though plenty of blood and gore, but all in all, I think the last Colm Meaney film I took in before this one -- "The Boys and Girl from County Clare" -- was much more my speed. That film (about, among other things, two middle-aged brothers playing dirty tricks on each other to try to keep the other guy's band from winning a prestigious music competition) I unequivocally enjoyed.
"Layer Cake" was more of an, "Oh! Well, that was interesting...and a little disturbing, perhaps" kind of experience.
But by going to the Regal Cinemas on Tuesday and using my membership card, I got my free popcorn, so I have no cause for complaint, have I?
Anyway, the title of the movie "Layer Cake" turns out to have something to do with hierarchies and pecking orders being the nature of life in this world, and it's (presumably) better to be on the top layer, if you possibly can be.
Which sort of got me thinking about how today was another exhausting day spent here at the publishing house, "forging" the signature of one of my old Bible professors from seminary (who also happens to be chief editor on this project) on stacks and stacks of letters and contracts, running off many copies of said letters and contracts, and stuffing and addressing envelopes, and other less than "top-of-the-cake" activities.
Maybe I'm not the top of the layer cake here at the publishing house, but I do take more than a little satisfaction in feeling that, without me doing all the fiddling little bits that hold the whole thing together, this cake would be very dry and unstable indeed.
For the moment, at least, I'm pretty happy to be the (well-compensated) yummy filling between the layers!
