Cleaning Out the Rest of My TBBT Fic Archives (mostly NOT Shenny)

Recently I discovered that I still had some downloaded and unexamined "Big Bang Theory" fanfiction.net archive fic files in a big folder on my laptop, left over from Spring of 2019 when I was trying to help the ShennyHQ folks find some lost fics.

Rather than just assume that there was nothing there that's not still posted on FFN and delete the lot, I've spent my free time this week sorting through every file and saving only those fics that were deleted by their authors at some point for some reason, in case anyone is looking for them.

Thanks to a recent inquiry about whether my Frisky Firelily files included any 'Shenny' fics (I hadn't even thought to look for her fics in any other fandom than Firefly), I downloaded the "B" section of those archived fanfiction.com files and got a whole bunch of Buffy, BSG, B5, and The Big Bang Theory fics, some of which have also been deleted or lost in the last couple of years.

More saved fics to share . . . including 'Silence of the Lambs'/'Hannibal fic

In addition to the 80 or so file versions of Firefly River/Jayne fanfics I have to share (including all the works of mik109 and thefriskyfire/The Frisky Firelily which had been deleted from fanfiction.net and two 'lost' works of gem588, "Stand or Fall" and "Better Than Gold"), I also want to remind anyone who's been searching that I have file copies of the fics of a much-beloved Lecter-fic author, Green Jewels.

I copied all Green Jewels' ff.net stories (the ones not found on other sites, anyway) into documents before she took them down back in 2013.

I wrote to her when I noticed that "Taking Liberties" had disappeared from ff.net, and she told me she was taking them ALL down, so I had warning even before she posted a warning to everyone in place of a final update on "Skin Game". I had time to copy not only every chapter of "Skin Game", but also selections of the more meaty discussions in the many, MANY reviews people had left over the years she was writing it.

"Against Her Will" (an AU taking off from the ending of the film "Hannibal") is the only other fic of Green Jewels' that I copied down because it didn't seem to be available on any other site. The others I made copies of were 'just in case'.

I have saved copies of at least 80 "Rayne" Firefly fics no longer on the net

Just in case I forgot to include this information in the entry before last, out of all those hours and hours of downloaded "F" fandom fanfics from fanfiction.net in years past, I saved and am willing to share my file copies of 67 stories by The Frisky Firelily [62 of those stories can actually be read in their entirety on 'Wayback' starting here] and 11 stories by mik109.

The mik109 fics I have saved are: "She's Not Normal" [incomplete], "A Solid Foundation", "Babysittin'", "Choices", "Deal", "Her Airlock", "Hostage", "Not Looking", "Not Worth the Trouble", "Slinky", and "Spotter". [All 11 of these can still be accessed in their entirety through Wayback Machine archive, as well, starting from here]

Thanks to friendly folks on the Rayne_Shippers LJ community, I already had text files of gem588's no-longer-available (since the crashing of the "Forecast: Rayne" website years ago) fics "Stand or Fall" and "Better Than Gold".

"Chiaroscuro" website of MissMurchison's fic is malfunctioning, BUT . . .

While trying to access some older (ca. 2003) works of my friend and beloved Buffy-'verse author missmurchison earlier today I discovered that her "Chiaroscuro" website is no longer available. It's not just her Spuffy fics that I love, but also her 'Spoyce' (Spike/Joyce -- surprisingly satisfying pairing!), her 'Spara' (Spike/Tara), and all the other pairings and threesomes she's written.

HOWEVER, my panic at this discovery was quickly ended by learning that the Wayback Machine web archive still seems to have multiple saved versions of ALL the pages and all the fics on that website, saved up through what I think were the most recent updates to the site in 2007 (see https://web.archive.org/web/20071230101753/http://home.mchsi.com:80/~missmurchison/fiction.html)

So if you're a fan of Miss M's work and want to re-read the entire "Chiaroscuro" saga or some of her other choice Spuffy, Spara, and Spoyce (etc.) fics, be not dismayed! I bring you tidings of joy.

Just set the Wayback Machine for "Awesome", Sherman! :)

A new friend over on the Rayne_Shippers LJ community gave me a link to chase down, in case I wanted to work on trying to recover some 'Firefly' fanfics that have been removed from ff.net and even from LJ: https://archive.org/details/fanfictiondotnet_repack

Fair warning: the files are arranged alphabetically by category/fandom, and after that by author, and in order to get 80 deleted 'Firefly' fics, I had to wait over an hour for the massive "F" zip file to download onto my laptop, and then it took around 18 hours to extract all the files in that zip file so I could find the 'Firefly' ones. I finally wised up and cancelled the extraction process before it got to 'Full Metal Alchemist' stories, since I was only going to delete those anyway, and then deleted all the fics that preceded and followed 'Firefly', in order not to take up so much space on my computer.

The deleted fics I was looking for and was able to find (there were many that were deleted prior to 2013-15 when these files were grabbed) were written by mik109 and thefriskyfire, but if you're interested in missing fics from other fandoms, it might be worth your while to take the time to download and unpack a mega zip file or two. :)

Retrieving some "Rayne" fic awards history for us fans of River/Jayne

Since the PrettyDeadly.net website went down (sometime in 2015, though it'd been wonky for some years before that), those of us who occasionally enjoy reading some River/Jayne Firefly fic have not had access to the lists of and links to award-winning and nominated fics that we used to find there.

Because I'm just that obsessive (and hate to lose any more fandom history of any kind), I've been working to piece together the "Blue Sun Fandom Awards", "Best of Rayne", and "Pretty Deadly Awards" lists -- with the last one being the toughest, since we apparently relied entirely on the PrettyDeadly.net website to preserve that info and didn't post complete (or even near-complete or partial) lists anywhere else at the time.

If ANYONE reading this was nominated for a "Pretty Deadly Award" for any year other than 2008 (the only year's ballot I was able to retrieve), please, please, pretty please let me know so I can improve the database I've been trying to patch together.

I'd especially like to have an idea of the nominees for the 2011 PDAs, since the results from that year were invalidated at the request of the one author who won every award that year due to an overly-enthusiastic friend who nominated her fics and repeatedly voted for them all regardless of category.

I'm also still missing the 2010 winners in the best song-fic, best Rayne kiss, and best Jayne-centric categories, as well as almost all the nominees in every category.

WriterCon and Back Again -- A Fan's Tale

I made it to WriterCon more or less in one piece the week before last, after trying to drive through torrential rains in TN, KY, and IL with (as it turned out) four very bald tires -- one of which developed quite a large hole very suddenly while I was cruising up Interstate 57 (fortunately, the rains had been left behind by that time). So, to anyone I might have spoken with on Sunday night, if I returned an inappropriate or nonsensical reply to you please believe that it was not through inattention or inebriation. I was simply unable to correctly fill in the 70% of your words that were lost in the background clutter of other conversations all around us. (That's probably another reason why parties, and especially parties with music, tend to put me on edge, since focusing on one voice among all the other voices and sounds becomes so much more difficult, and I hate appearing foolish.)

For instance (and I hope I'm safe in assuming that nobody needs mild spoiler warnings for the movie at this point?), I hadn't previously noted how much the character of the new James T. Kirk resembles Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan, at times. I got a very Illyan-Miles kind of vibe from that final look between Pike and Kirk near the end, making me think, "Be careful what you dare this young man to do, for he may exceed your expectations to a terrifying degree." Plus, there's that whole bluffing (mostly) your way from academy misfit to commander of a starship in a few short days -- using gall, startling competence, and sheer force of personality -- that Miles and New-Jim both seem to share.

Or maybe that's just me?

Wednesday was spent driving ten and a half hours straight (with two brief stops for gas, one of which included a side-trip to pick up fast food for the road), in order to get back to TN while there was still a bit of daylight left -- just long enough for me to nip around back and pick all those ripe and over-ripe tomatoes (cherry, yellow pear, and my first ripe Mr. Stripey) and raspberries (red, and a few gold) which had accumulated in my absence. I have my priorities, after all, and during August fresh raspberries and home-grown tomatoes seem to rank pretty high, for some reason.

[Okay, that's MOST of the post I wrote this afternoon and which LJ promptly ate. I think the original version was more eloquent, or maybe even more coherent, but this is what I could piece together tonight.]

Ah, the pause that refreshes . . .

I have a former doctoral program classmate (now a professor at a seminary in Oklahoma) who comes back to town for a few days about twice a year, and always tries to make room for a Scrabble game sometime during her brief visit. ( complaining about how rarely I can get a game of Scrabble these days )

Anyway, last night was our second game this year, and boy, did I need that break from the too-much-alone-time that's my normal pattern here at home! (I know, I know! I whine about people-overload while at the con the previous weekend, but then as soon as I get home I complain of not enough people to socialize with. I'm just an inveterate whiner, I guess!)

On these rare Scrabble evenings when she's back in town I always bring over at least the main course and a side or two for supper for the three of us -- my friend, the retired teacher with whom she always stays on these visits, and myself -- and usually I try to do something fairly impressive, so I can bask in their appreciation. ( frozen food is our friend )

To top off the mellowing effect of the evening, I happened to get very lucky in my letter draws, and finished with a final score of 412, to my friend's 356 ( more info for those who give a rat's behind about Scrabble )

Plus, we watched two Bruce Campbell films from 1992 back-to-back on the free movies On Demand feature during our game -- "Mindwarp", which was as gory and cheesy as I'd expected, and my old favorite "Army of Darkness", which is gory, cheesy, and truly witty.

Truly, my cup runneth over with contentment after last night! Nerd Nirvana was nearly achieved, and no real cleaning required afterwards.

movie recs: "Easy Virtue" and "The Brothers Bloom"

I made it to the local multiplex Saturday for back-to-back showings of Easy Virtue (an adaptation of the Noel Coward play) and The Brothers Bloom, and I'd heartily recommend both of them.

I've never been a particular fan of Jessica Biel's work (perhaps I have difficulty separating her from the bratty and out-of-control Mary she played in the few episodes of Seventh Heaven that I accidentally watched, once), but -- in spite of looking far too buff and toned for the period -- she eventually won me over and had me rooting for her character 'Larita', the American race-car driver who marries a younger man from the landed gentry. My sympathy for her character might initially have had more to do with how well the part was written and adapted in the script, but I have to say she executed it well enough. And, as noted in my review of last year's Then She Found Me, I think I love Colin Firth even more when he's looking harried and scruffy and somewhat the worse for wear, as he definitely is in much of Easy Virtue, playing Biel's new father-in-law who may have left too much of himself in the trenches of World War I.

I haven't seen Kristin Scott Thomas give a bad performance yet, either in French or in English, but she's fiendishly good at being an implacable and oh-so-genteel bully as Biel's indignant mother-in-law. And the actor who played the butler Furber -- Kris Marshall, a name I don't remember hearing before -- stole many of the scenes he was in, as I believe he was intended to.

I may've missed the first minute or two of The Brothers Bloom (I stayed too long listening to the music over the end-credits of the previous movie), but I don't think I missed anything too essential. At any rate, I was hooked by the drama and mischief and underlying trauma of the con-artist brothers played by Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo, the delight of Rachel Weisz as the idiosyncratic heiress who is supposed to be their mark, and a host of strong supporting characters. There was some very dark material hinted at in the past of the characters (nothing explicit, but it seemed pretty clear to me that at least one of the brothers had been molested as a child), but it was told with enough style and panache and insight into the human thirst to write ourselves a better life story and tell it well enough to make it eventually become real to make the traumatic and violent bits not only tolerable, but perhaps ultimately essential to the whole.

movie recommendation: "The Merry Gentlemen"

I've fallen way behind on my movie reviews lately (though that's partly because I just don't get to the movies nearly as often as I'd like). By this time, I'm sure everyone's heard plenty about "Up" (I'd thought "Monsters vs. Aliens" was a great animated film, until I saw "Up" two weeks ago, and then my socks were officially and thoroughly knocked off!) and "Star Trek" (which I've only seen twice, but which has reinvigorated my love for the Kirk-Spock relationship in fanfic!). So, I won't bother to review "Up" or "Star Trek", at this late date.

However, in case you haven't heard about or seen reviews of "The Merry Gentlemen" already, I wanted to be sure to give it a hearty recommendation.

Michael Keaton does a great job both acting in and directing the film, and it kept me glued to my seat just because the characters were so well-done and their relationships so real. Be warned that the 'merry' in the title is a major piece of irony, since none of the three 'gentlemen' (at least one of whom is completely undeserving of that name) to whom the heroine relates are exactly overflowing with joy, Christmas season or no. But, in spite of the depressing situations that each of the major characters have to confront, there are plenty of genuinely funny moments in this film, and I actually felt less depressed after seeing it than I was before.

Honestly, I could see "The Merry Gentlemen" again in the near future, which is something I rarely say about a non-sci-fi film.
