Just a note to say that the Spanish-language service finished early enough this past Sunday (after only 90 minutes, instead of the 2 hours that's more normal) to allow me to get back across town in time to take in a matinee showing of Captain America: the First Avenger at my local multiplex.

Awesome!

And I mean that in every sense, including the recurring impulse to say "Awww...!" because skinny little Steve Rogers is just such a thoroughly lovable, decent guy that by the time he becomes big, buff Captain America you mainly see the sweetness and goodness (of a non-cloying sort) rather than the super-powered physique.

Which, it turns out, is pretty much the perfect recipe for creating a superhero movie that has heart and where I can actually care about the characters in it, rather than simply "ooh" and "aah" for a few minutes over the special effects before the novelty wears off and there's nothing left to hold my interest.

Who'd've thunk it? :)

Let me add that the above comments are in NO WAY intended as a slur upon the other very good superhero films that I've seen this year.

In case anyone cares, my enthusiastic thoughts about previous films can be found here:
X-Men: First Class -- main review and additional thoughts on the character of Charles Xavier

Thor -- brief review

Unfortunately, the very underwhelming experience of viewing Tron: Legacy at the start of this calendar year made me reluctant to see the very poorly reviewed Green Lantern so far. So . . . if anyone has seen the GL movie and has anything good to say about it, please let me know!

I really enjoyed Green Lantern, as did my husband. Of course, we went into the movie with mutual crushes on Ryan Reynolds, so that may have swayed us. But it was enjoyable, and worth a watch, although possibly on DVD, rather than in theaters. There were some fun, funny moments, and I liked watched Hal grow up over the course of the film.

Good to know! Since I seem to have missed my chance to see it on the big screen around here, I'll plan to watch it on DVD.

My fave film of the year so far. I'm still singing the War Bonds song. :)

Oh, I LOVED the music -- that absolutely in-period (and catchy) "...star-spangled man with the plan..." ditty included! :)

You're not the last to see it. I'm still debating, so this is timely.... Although I carefully avoided most of your post in case it would spoil me!

Nope, no spoilers in my post (unless you didn't already know Captain America's civilian name!).

You will enjoy it very much, I believe. :)

Captain America is vastly superior, in my opinion, to Green Lantern.

I truly loved Cap. I thought they did an excellent job of showing rather than telling and demonstrating why, even though he's far from the most powerful, he's the leader of the Avengers.

Indeed! That courage that comes from standing up to bullies no matter how often you're knocked down, that indomitable will to do the right thing, that compassion, and above all that incredible level of sheer decency -- those are the qualities that inspire other superheroes to strive to be better, to never forget that their job is to be true champions, rather than just bullies with better PR than the villains.

All of that, plus the ability to think outside the box and find unconventional solutions to the problems he faces, as well as the ability to identify and utilize other people's strengths rather than trying to do everything himself.
