My former classmate in the doctoral program (who then became my supervisor at the publishing house until two years ago) contacted me this week for the first time in months, so we arranged to meet today for an early and inexpensive lunch at Chipotle Grill (first time either of us had been to that chain) followed by a matinee showing of the Brendan Gleason and Don Cheadle film The Guard.
Lunch was just okay, but the movie choice turned out to be wonderful.
It's funny in a really smart, quirky, human way, but also thoughtful and touching, and with some very satisfying action scenes. The bad guys are scary and creepy and yet prone to having hilarious philosophical discussions at the oddest times. The good guys are prickly and human and ultimately heroic in a strange way that works.
Definitely see this film, if you get the chance!
