Not to "damn with faint praise" (or "praise with faint damns"), but I was honestly surprised by how enthralled and invested I became while watching "Kung Fu Hustle" on Tuesday afternoon.
I was expecting a lot of Looney-Tunes-type physical comedy and cartoon violence (given the previews this movie has been showing), and that was fun (when it wasn't gory -- no kids' movie, this!). But what I didn't expect was that there was an actual message beneath all the broad comedy and slapstick and special effects: namely, that heroes really do come in the most unlikely of packages, sometimes, and even the most unprepossessing people can turn out to have greatness of soul and the ability to do good miracles hidden within them.
I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, and it's officially hours past my bedtime right now while I'm still at my university office and really need to go home and sleep, so I'll say no more . . . for the moment!
But this movie is definitely the sort of thing that you will like, if you like this sort of thing (think of the most wildly improbable slapstick episodes of "Xena", and then cross that with the over-all message of that television series as a whole, and you'll have some idea what to expect).
And a good night to all!
