I, too, really enjoyed Miyazaki's take on Howl. You really really should read the books (both the original and its very quirky sequel, Castle in the Air). Based on the overlap in our fandoms and interests, I think you would find both to be rich experiences. I read most of the book leading up to seeing the Miyazaki (just because I love it; I had been prepared by a friend that the movie was wonderful in its own way, but not the same story as the book), was just compelled to turn around and read it two times more after that. I'm now rereading Castle in the Air.

Christian Bale was wonderful as Miyazaki's Howl. DWJ's Howl is quite different, though (not a complaint, just a notable difference between the two media).

Thanks for the tip! Those DO sound like books I'd enjoy.

And I love it when I find books that I can re-read over and over again, or movies that inspire me to go home and do just that.

I expected that Miyazaki's "Howl" would be different from the original, since he always seems to put his stamp on his movies, even when he's basing the screenplay on somebody else's work. And since I love what he does, I think that's great.

But it sounds like I might also really enjoy what Wynne Jones does!
