I was encouraged by the mountains of neatly sorted food and emergency supplies at the university drop-off site I visited with my contribution. If the other 4 drop-off points around campus are piled that high with quality goods, then Second Harvest should be able to fill an extra truck or two to send to Louisiana.

Since I managed to combine my drop-off trip with a much-delayed visit to Student Health to renew some asthma prescriptions and get my blood calcium level checked, I'm feeling better all around for my trip to campus this week.

Meanwhile, I've added my name and personalized message to the latest petition going around, asking Bush to stop administration attempts to blame the victims and "spin" responsibility for all the needlessly lost lives onto local officials who'd been screaming for help for days beforehand or who had long warned about the fragility of the levees in New Orleans. I'm sure this message/petition, like all my attempts to politely and respectfully communicate with our president (on the as-yet-to-be-validated theory that people are more likely to make necessary changes in their behavior if you don't start out by telling them they suck and are hopelessly incompetent idiots . . . even if that's what you truly believe them to be!) will simply end up in the "circular file" at the White House, but I have to try.

For anyone who hasn't seen it and might be interested, here's the petition link and a blurb of explanation:

The President and his administration failed at their most important job: keeping America safe. The federal effort was too little, too late and the cost of their delay will be paid for in human lives. Now, they are seeking political cover by blaming state and local officials, despite the fact that they had begged the administration for help early on. It's really outrageous that the President would blame the victims at a time like this. Will you help us tell him he needs to stop blaming the victims and get to work helping them?

You're most welcome! Thanks for keeping ME posted on the news, good and bad, from the rescue front.

Glad to hear the charitable spirit is alive and well, and keep taking those calcium tablets! (We like to imagine you fit and well, and mowing down students in the corridors whenever you're distracted.)

Thanks, Kes! I got the results of my blood test yesterday, and they said my calcium level was at "9" (whatever that means), which is right where they like to see it, so I should keep on doing what I've been doing in the calcium department.

Meanwhile, I'm not noting much improvement from the stronger doses of Advair they gave me to try, as yet, but it's probably early days yet.

The doctor who called to give me my calcium results also reminded me to come in as soon as I started to have any asthma problems, rather than wait till they get so bad I have to be hospitalized (which is what seems to have precipitated my dangerous calcium deficiency in the Spring of '04, with the heavy prednizone treatments exacerbating an existing and unrecognized calcium deficiency). It's nice to be reminded that it's better to "waste" the doctor's time with a small problem than risk it getting to be a big one.
