Spike seems to get snarky when he feels he has to be "on guard" or on the defensive. He doesn't tend to do that with Fred, and it seems to be a measure of his "comfort" (or at least his sense that he doesn't have to guard his feelings or put on a false front too much) in front of Andrew that he was so careful of Andrew's feelings and not trying to push Andrew away in any serious way.
