That's what my advisor suggested when I begged him for deadlines and accountability to help me overcome my self-doubt-generated procrastination: that I email him and the rest of the committee 40 pages of the dissertation draft every five weeks, in order to (hopefully) be able to put a defensible draft before the department 7 months from now.

Now, I just have to go home and DO it!

Yay! These sound very do-able, and I'm sure you'll meet those deadlines.

You should be just finishing up around Writercon, which means we can do some celebrating of how far you've come.

Amen! Let it be so!

Deadlines do help. Especially when you're not sure about your progress and would like other people to look things over before you get too far in.

[sending good vibes]

good vibes much appreciated!

And I really need deadlines, now, since I've been feeling so low that only fear of public humiliation is likely to motivate me (haven't felt any hope for rewards or approval of my work, lately).

Just don't think of it as OMG I MUST WRITE 40 PAGES RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW OR I'M A TOTAL FAILURE I CAN NEVER DO IT OMG OMG.

Think of it as what it is, which is, 1 page a day. Or 2 pages a day 4 days a week, and take long weekends off. 2 pages a day you can really do.

Thanks! the two-pages a day thing DOES make it seem more do-able. I hadn't gotten that far, yet, in my thinking. But you're absolutely right that my first instinct is to get all panicky about it. thanks for your pre-emptive words!
