Thank you, this is very insightful, and I think the episode merits this kind of analysis.

I admit my initial reaction was, "Squee! They held hands!!!" but I did have one semi-rational thought about the hollowness imagery. Dante's inferno was a hole through the earth. When Vergil and Dante reached the center they had to crawl over the body of Dis himself to travel upwards towards Purgatory and then, ultimately, Paradise and Beatrice.

I don't know if that's the path Joss has set his heroes (excuse me, his "champions") on, but it seems likely they'll have to enter that abyss before the season is over.

Thanks for bringing in the Dante -- I've never actually read any of Dante, I'm ashamed to say, and so didn't realize the classical references that were being enacted before me on the screen. Wow!

And can I say again how cute and chuckle-worthy I find this latest icon of yours? But here's another poser: Which would be cuter -- soulful vampires holding hands, or hamsters in space? Tough choice.
