Just had to copy that from your own review of the episode -- obviously, you've got quite a lot to add that I missed out on, and I'm only partway through your post. Thanks so much for finding all those layers and nuances, and especially the bit about Spike as the moral center, not following when Angel says "to Hell with the world", and so causing Angel to pause and reconsider. I'm going to read your post carefully, and then rewatch the episode at my earliest opportunity.
