revdorothyl: missmurchsion made this (Forward Momentum)

Just a quick note, because I was IM-ing a little while with [livejournal.com profile] missmurchison about the Stephen Colbert comedy routine (which I regrettably only heard about on Jon Stewart's Daily Show after the fact, though I've since been brought up to speed on some of the highlights) and how, apparently, a lot of folks on the Right are insisting that Colbert simply wasn't funny (as opposed to, "he spoke truth to power, and we no longer know how to deal with that in Washington, so we were too shocked to laugh", perhaps?).

So, anyway, somehow I was forcibly reminded of the movie I went to see Sunday night and which I thoroughly enjoyed: "American Dreamz".

I went to see it because it looked like fun, and also partly because I was irked by the way in which Richard Roeper had dissed "American Dreamz" on the "Ebert and Roeper" show the weekend before. Roeper had complained about how it mocked Dubya and that it just wasn't funny, though he pointed out that he'd enjoyed "Primary Colors" as proof that he wasn't averse to making fun of presidents when it was funny (translation: Democrats are the only fair game)! No, if you liked "Primary Colors", you obviously have no political bias whatsoever and are a good judge of what's really funny or not! [sarcasm]

Ebert gave it thumbs up, though, and I agree with him. Not a flawless movie by any means, but surprisingly insightful at times, and it was at least an affectionate look at Bush (or whatever the president was supposed to be called in the movie) as a basically decent person who might change some of his ideas if he ever clued in to reality outside his tightly controlled bubble.
