Just a quick note, because I was IM-ing a little while with [livejournal.com profile] missmurchison about the Stephen Colbert comedy routine (which I regrettably only heard about on Jon Stewart's Daily Show after the fact, though I've since been brought up to speed on some of the highlights) and how, apparently, a lot of folks on the Right are insisting that Colbert simply wasn't funny (as opposed to, "he spoke truth to power, and we no longer know how to deal with that in Washington, so we were too shocked to laugh", perhaps?).

So, anyway, somehow I was forcibly reminded of the movie I went to see Sunday night and which I thoroughly enjoyed: "American Dreamz".

I went to see it because it looked like fun, and also partly because I was irked by the way in which Richard Roeper had dissed "American Dreamz" on the "Ebert and Roeper" show the weekend before. Roeper had complained about how it mocked Dubya and that it just wasn't funny, though he pointed out that he'd enjoyed "Primary Colors" as proof that he wasn't averse to making fun of presidents when it was funny (translation: Democrats are the only fair game)! No, if you liked "Primary Colors", you obviously have no political bias whatsoever and are a good judge of what's really funny or not! [sarcasm]

Ebert gave it thumbs up, though, and I agree with him. Not a flawless movie by any means, but surprisingly insightful at times, and it was at least an affectionate look at Bush (or whatever the president was supposed to be called in the movie) as a basically decent person who might change some of his ideas if he ever clued in to reality outside his tightly controlled bubble.

I adore Hugh Grant--like him when he's a nice guy, *love* him when he's a bit sleazy--so I'm very much looking forward to seeing this movie. My sense is that it's a bit kinder to the president's character than I'd like, but I can deal with that.

I don't know who Stephen Colbert is, though. ??

Stephen Colbert is the actor/comedian who used to be a regular on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and then got spun off into his own half-hour mock news show, The Colbert Report, where he pretends to be an arch-conservative pain in the butt, but mocks in the margins and subtext.

He was asked to speak at this annual event attended by the White House press corps that was supposed to roast the president, but was (as usual) mostly rather lame butt-kissage, and apparently Colbert took it seriously as a chance to satirize both the Press Corps and the White House, and even got veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas to do a skit with him, but his jokes were a bit too on-target for a lot of the the audience that evening. (Pointing out that the press don't even pretend to ask the Administration investigative or critical questions anymore, for instance, or saying that the Bush Administration isn't sinking like the "Titanic" as some nasty journalists have said, but soaring, like the "Hindenburg"! That sort of thing.)

I bet the video is still available on the web, somewhere.

Oh, and you'll love Hugh Grant in American Dreamz -- it is the most ultra-nasty, ultra-sleazy performance I've ever seen him give. And yet, he almost makes you like him, because he's so 'okay' with the fact that he's emotionally damaged goods and a total cad with no redeeming qualities.

Yes, it was kinder to Bush than I would've been (though, hey, it's Dennis Quaid, and I like to like Dennis Quaid!), but the Karl Rove-ish character played by Willam Dafoe gets no mercy whatsoever.

You can view the whole presentation at the link below. Scroll down a little. They have it in three parts. It's totally worth it.
