I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this on LJ, but I just caught the last half of this report on NPR's Morning Edition this morning, and it did my heart immense good:

Vampire Slayer Buffy Saves Iraq Reporter's Soul
by Jamie Tarabay

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' saved the world and the sanity of NPR's Jamie Tarabay while she was in Baghdad. Tarabay explores why she needed the slayer during her time in Iraq.

I got the link to this story off whedonesque.com
It made me so happy! Just what Buffy should be doing for everyone who needs her. Joss Whedon would be proud.

Indeed! I'm glad it's getting some play on the internet, since my boss-of-bosses and I were apparently the only two in my office to have heard the original broadcast of this story, and it's helpful to be reminded that even now that 'Buffy' reruns are only available early on Saturday and Sunday mornings on cable, the DVD's continue to help people find their way and give a narrative context that provides meaning for their life experiences and choices.

It's nice to have a more contemporary example to point to in the news when people ask me why I still think it's worth studying and writing about a show that finished five years ago.
