"... it always made me feel inadequate. (Er, maybe that's the J perfectionist in me...)"

LOL! I think some folks are just so eager to have an identiy -- ANY identity -- that they'll glom onto any labels they can, in order to be able to say, "See? I DO know who I am, after all! I'm THIS. Now, all is explained."

The two times I've taken the long version in a bona fide career counselling center, I came up "INFJ" ("the author") and then (almost 8 years later) as "INTJ" ("the scientist" -- but I was in so much emotional pain at the time and doing a job that was so unsuited to my gifts and inclinations, that I'm not surprised that I apparently had my feelings temporarily turned off that year). On the short version in the PLEASE UNDERSTAND ME book, I sometimes come up INFP ("the mystic"), and the longer my PhD studies drag on, the more convinced I am that that may be the case (an eternal seeker, who never feels she's gathered enough data to actually WRITE the dissertation)!

Oh dear, that's me to a T. Types be damned.

"Types be damned."

Amen. As the crowd in Monty Python's "Life of Brian" shouted in unison (in response to Brian's exhortation to stop following him and instead think for themselves), "Yes! We are all individuals! We are all unique!" Or something like that -- it's been a while since I've seen that movie.

'"INTJ" ("the scientist"...)'

Thinking back, I believe that should have been "the architect" or something else, and that the ISTJ is the personality type described as the scientist in PLEASE UNDERSTAND ME. Not that I think anyone cares, particularly.

Jeesh! I think my INFJ roots are showing (perfectionist, much?).
