Just a quick movie review note:
My brother and I went to see the "Sherlock Holmes" movie this afternoon (I might've skipped it in preference for something like "Up in the Air" with much better reviews, but "Holmes" was what brother wanted to see), and I was pleasantly surprised by how much more there was to it than indicated in the previews.
Yes, there are a lot of action scenes and explosions and brawling (none of which I normally associate with the Arthur Conan Doyle detective or his better film incarnations), but there is also more. These may not be the Holmes and Watson we expect, but they're really interesting and entertaining characters, and very well-acted, I thought.
The mystery isn't really such a mystery in this film, but the character work makes it an entertaining film. Not a profound film, certainly, but it's worth a look-see.

As to 'Up in the Air,' we saw that last week and it was just all right. George Clooney is exactly who you expect him to be, which isn't a bad thing per se, but there certainly aren't any surprises in his performance. The supporting actress that plays his co-worker steals every scene she's in and saved the movie from being just so-so imo.
'The Messenger' is probably the best thing I've seen recently. Great acting, moving story, funny, sad, amazing work. (Even if I can't help remembering the lead, Ben Foster, as the child actor from Flash Forward every time I see him. ;-)
