My mother and sister drove down from Wisconsin last Friday to spend five days helping me clean house (and do some local sight-seeing) and headed out very early this morning. They're now home safe, and I'm congratulating all of us on getting along so well and getting so much done.

Yes, there were a few hiccups during the visit (like my mother bundling up all the winter clothes I'd set out -- intending to replace the summer clothes currently taking up all the space in my dresser drawers -- and taking them to GoodWill in five bags as donations while I was away preaching for the Hispanic worship service late Sunday morning, because she didn't hear me say repeatedly that those were NOT discards and not to touch them), but we all managed to stay civil and have some fun times together.

And I'm trying to look on the absence of so many of my sweaters and turtlenecks and heavier slacks and jeans as an opportunity, rather than a shortage. Now I have the fun of trying to figure out what's left to wear, with so many of my tried-and-true favorite outfits for cold weather no longer available!

Positive mental attitude, here -- that's the ticket!

Oh dear. You weren't able to ask for them back?

I didn't find out they were gone (the winter clothes were stacked on top of the dresser in my guest room, where my mother and sister were sleeping) until the following morning, and when Mom and I went back to the drop-off site for GoodWill with her receipt, the guys there remembered her, but they'd already sorted all my clothes into huge bins with all the other donations of clothing that had come in over the past few days, and they insisted that nobody not an employee of GoodWill was allowed to set foot in the truck-trailer and open the bins. I had a number to call, and might've been able to insist that someone higher up give me permission to climb in and go bin-diving for whatever of my clothes I could find, but at the time I just found the prospect too daunting.

However, my mother knows exactly what to get me for Christmas and my birthday in January, now, doesn't she? :)

Five bags of clothes gone? You should be beatified immediately for facing that with a good attitude. I'm glad you mostly enjoyed the visit.

I'm too saintly to comment on the possibility of my beatification, but thank you! :)

Oh my Lord! Did she at least offer to take you shopping after doing that? Such presumption. My hat is off to you for remaining civil after that.
