Dr. Who would seem to be an obvious fandom to include (or it may be that the particular con you are attending renders that a moot fandom).

On question 5, it's not clear whether you are asking for fandoms that friends and family share with the respondant, or if they just have friends and family whom they know participate in fandom. Also, you may want to tweak it a bit if you mean "friends who predate your participation in fandom"---the dreaded "RL friends" vs. "online friends."

On question 7, if you're meaning to force them to pick THE most important, you should indicate check only one. Either way, you should specify One/As many as applicable, because that could confound your data (i.e., some may pick The One, because they think they're supposed to, even thought they feel that they have two primary ones, etc.)

It's a well-constructed survey, despite my minor nitpicks.

Dr. Who! Of course! I knew I'd forget something really obvious. That IS a major, long-term fandom, and I DID mean to include it, even if I couldn't include all the more recent fandoms (Smallville, etc.), before getting to the "fill in your own" option.

As for your other critiques, thanks so much, and I'll make those changes also! I knew I was too close to it, after spending all day trying to hammer it out, so I really appreciate your help!

You're most welcome. Good luck with the data collection and don't forget to have some fun at the con, too.

Tolkien and/or LotR should be included here either under literary, or maybe Media (or both). The Tolkien fandom has been organized for yonks. I think one of the fans is responsible for mapping Middle Earth (maps we now see in books). I think Christopher Lee was a fan for years. They have a big web presence.

You might want to include Farscape under media, also.

Gulp! How could I have omitted Farscape and LotR? Thanks for saving me from a butt-chewing at the Con!

Okay. I didn't know if it was intentional or not. Since it wasn't...

Did you mean to leave out Firefly? I know it's short, so you may well have, but arguably, the fandom was partially responsible for the fact that there'll be a feature film.

Actually, my first draft INCLUDED Firefly for that very reason, but then I took it out to make room for Dr. Who and Farscape. Perhaps I should delete X-Files, instead? I'm not sure how many people are still strongly involved in that fandom, but you see the re-runs everywhere on cable, it seems.

Speaking of inspiring movies, maybe I ought to include Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide) in the literary, too?
