raising questions like why would Spike not have known already that Angel was ensouled and more likely to be helping the humans than fellow vampires when they met in "School Hard," if they'd previously covered that ground on a submarine in 1943?

Because Spike doesn't find out Angel's ensouled; he thinks Angelus is playing both sides to come out ahead.

Good point! I had assumed that making Spike as well as Lawson get out and swim, in order to ensure that no more humans became snacks, was evidence that Angel wasn't just being opportunistic-Angelus-playing-nice-with-human-authorities-in-order-to-get-ahead ('cause Angelus didn't seem to play nice with authority, ever -- whether it was the Master expecting him to play disciple like Darla or Cordelia/Beast-Master booming commands into his head). However, I'll amend my statement above. Thanks for pointing this out, O sharp-eyed one!
