revdorothyl: SG1 finally together (Jack-Sam Love)
* * * * * * *

Warning: These are my own notes, made for the purpose of reminding myself what I've read and particularly enjoyed in the way of Stargate crossover fics, so there may well be MINOR (for the most part . . . I hope!) SPOILERS contained in just SOME of the descriptions below. So, I'd advise you to skip reading the descriptions and just click on the links to check the stories out for yourself, if you're extremely concerned about plot or relationship spoilers. Otherwise, please enjoy this very incomplete listing of some of the stories I've enjoyed reading and re-reading over the years!

See also my list of SG1/BtVS crossovers (so many that they required a separate post all on their own), list of BtVS crossover fanfic faves UNRELATED to SG1 for all other BtVS crossovers, and list of favorite crossover fics unrelated to BtVS or SG1.

LARGE FONT indicates stories I've re-read and enjoyed multiple times.

Upon further consideration, maybe what bugged me the most about the SGU premiere last Friday was flashbacks are a privilege, not a right )

I have to say, if it hadn't been for Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, and Michael Shanks being mentioned as guest stars in the opening credits, I might have deleted the premiere of "Stargate Universe" from my DVR without watching, since the bits that I did happen to see while taping were extremely underwhelming.

Maybe it'll improve in later episodes, but Read more... )

There were SOME new characters whom I didn't immediately hate, but none so far that I really feel compelled to know more about. If I watch next week, it'll probably be in hopes of either more cameos from "real" Stargate characters like O'Neill, Carter, Walter, and even Dr. Lee, OR some marked improvement in the tone and likability of the new series.

Of course I'm not overjoyed that the season premiere of Stargate: SG1 last night ended with a cliffhanger (though at least the wait to see what happens next is just until next week), but other than that, I have to say I was favorably impressed and pretty well satisfied with the whole line-up and the way things seem to be going for the second seasons of Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica and the ninth season of SG1. cut in case anyone has spoiler concerns )

Off to bed now, considering that I have to drive quite a ways tomorrow morning to preach . . . and I'll be leaving extra early, since the 2004 Buick I'm driving -- which has less than 36000 miles on it -- is having serious transmission problems, but Monday was the soonest I could get the dealership to look at it, so I'll just have to hope that the car makes it to McMinnville and back, or that IF it breaks down, another helpful Harley Man will come by to Get Me to the Church On Time.

I finally watched and re-watched JM's USA movie Cool Money last week, and found that though the first half hour (which was all I'd initially seen before changing channels and leaving the VCR to tape the rest) can seem a bit slow, it's actually a pretty watchable and entertaining little flick. I guess I was expecting (on the basis of the brief promos) something smooth and very stylish and fanciful (on the order of Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn in How to Steal a Million, perhaps). If they'd stuck with the original title, The Pierre Heist, I might have more correctly tuned my expectations to "true crime story," rather than expecting "frothy fantasy about cool-looking crooks in tuxedos" (which this, of course, was not). Sis prefers JM crazy )

I'm sure everybody and their aunt has already weighed in on last Friday's SciFi lineup, but I can't resist jotting down my own reaction to the SG1 finale. spoilers for SG1 'Moebius' )

Finally, I see that my earlier prediction was right, about the male critics panning Miss Congeniality 2 (at least if Ebert & Roeper were any indication), but I still predict that this film will do more-than-respectable business. The women and girls who were watching it with me last Thursday were just having way too much fun for it to bomb.

Maybe it's not Shakespeare or Jane Austen, but then it's not trying to be. But what it does aim to do it does very well -- to provide lots of broad comedy and a few telling observations about women and self-confidence (given society's "push-you-pull-you-and-run-you-over-with-a-truck" head games with young girls), in a throw-away wrapper of a reasonably entertaining (if improbable) "solve-the-crime-and-save-the-victims" plotline.

I stopped by the nearest multiplex as soon as I got out of church yesterday just on the off chance that something good might be starting (I'd neglected to pick up a new copy of the movie listings last week), and was so delighted to see "Bride & Prejudice" starting immediately that I didn't even worry about trying to find any other films to see that afternoon.

It was wonderful! Even though I used to re-read the Jane Austen novel at least once a year (I stopped after the 12th re-reading, I think, which makes me a bit of a slacker, I know) and therefore have a pretty thorough knowledge of the original material, I was still finding myself surprised and delighted by the unexpected ways that Gurinder Chadha's Anglo-American-Bollywood adaptation found to re-create and breathe new life into the familiar characters and situations, while maintaining the spirit of the original.

'Bride & Prejudice' spoilage )

As with "Bend It Like Beckham", you want to stay through ALL the closing credits on this film, to enjoy the good-hearted hamming and out-takes. And Naveen Andrews (the break-out heartthrob on Lost, in many people's opinion) is absolutely delicious as the "Mr. Bingley" character. See this film, if you haven't already, and you will be very glad that you did.

And since I'm running out of time for tonight, let me just add how pleased I was with the direction things seemed to be taking on Stargate: SG1 last Friday (which I was able to watch with undiluted pleasure, thanks to my sister keeping her promise and mailing me the tape of last week's episode to watch on Thursday).Read more... )

As for Atlantis, I'm not a big Teyla fan (like her just fine as a person, but just don't feel invested in her character at all), so I found it an "okay" episode, setting up future developments in more interesting episodes to come, I hope.

And hurray for another Battlestar Galactica episode written by DS9 alums David Weddle and Bradley Thompson (who also wrote the first half of the Starbuck's-missing-in-action two-parter). More in-depth work on the family dynamics between Adama and Apollo and Starbuck and Laura Roslyn, and more insight into the theological underpinnings of the series. Yay!

In other encouraging news, until [livejournal.com profile] keswindhover mentioned it yesterday, I had no idea that Ben Browder is supposed to be signing on with Stargate: SG1 sometime in the New Year. When was this announced, and where was I? That's important, encouraging news. If I can't have a decent amount of O'Neill/MacGyver in the new episodes (and I've felt the short rations in the first half of season 8, much as I enjoyed many of those episodes), then having John Crichton on board to supply the macho-but-sensitive-under-that-wildly-funny-irreverent-exterior-and-cuter-than-a-bug's-ear quotient is the next best thing, I guess. Yay!

[update -- I finally tracked down a brief announcement on Sci-Fi Wire, about Browder signing on for the ninth season of SG1: Read more... )

And [livejournal.com profile] x_h00ine's summary of the first seven seasons of Stargate had me laughing out loud this morning. Would have been shooting coffee out my nose, if I hadn't had the forethought to finish breakfast before reading it.

[some slight spoilers to the latest "Stargate: SG1" episode after the cut-line.]

First off, I have to say "Hail," "Ave," "Whoo-hoo!", "You go, girl!", and "Thank-you-very-much-O-Revered-and-Honored-Prophet-of-Good-and-Important-Stuff" to [livejournal.com profile] missmurchison for making me this cool new icon (she made the previous one, too, from Hayao Miyazaki's powerful "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind"). Adding this to the "Buffy" season 5 DVD's Miss M sent me as a birthday present and the cool Buffy-and-Xena animated birthday card she made with the help of her offspring, and she has officially become my birthday good fairy godmother.

Second, but still on the general birthday topic, I'm just coming to grips with the fact that I'm going to be 42 years old tomorrow. According to the late Douglas Adams, "42" is the ultimate answer to "life, the universe, and everything," but the tricky part is figuring out what the heck the question actually was. Read more... )
